Covenant of Mayors publishes an article on the use of insurance data in the RESCCUE project to study climate impacts in Barcelona

The Covenant of Mayors, the world's largest movement for local climate and energy actions, has recently published an article about RESCCUE’s case study in Barcelona. This platform brings together thousands of local governments voluntarily committed to implementing EU climate and energy objectives since 2008.

The piece is focused on the use of insurance data in the RESCCUE project. In particular, RESCCUE has developed flood depth-damage curves tailored for Barcelona. These curves indicate the vulnerability against pluvial floods of properties at risk in Barcelona, and helped the Spanish city to estimate the economic impact of floods, as well as resilience assessment, planning and management.

The project provided the city of Barcelona with the knowledge and necessary information to update and enhance the Barcelona Climate Plan. The results obtained within RESCCUE will be used to plan climate adaptation actions such as retention tanks to absorb the greatest amount of rainwater in future weather events. Finally, the prioritisation method of adaptation measures to deal with climate impacts, proposed by Cetaqua, has been a useful tool to facilitate decision-making processes within the city council.
